YOUR AREA COMMISSION:
On Feb. 4, 2019, Columbus City Council approved Ordinance 0278-2019, enacting Section 3111.22 of the Columbus City Code in order to create the Far West Area Commission (as emergency legislation). Columbus City Council established Area Commissions in the early 1970s. The purpose of an area commission is to act as a liaison between neighborhood groups, property owners, residents, developers and city officials. The Far West Side Area Commission will include residents in Far West Columbus, surrounding townships (Brown, Norwich, Prairie) and Hilliard.

If you would like to follow this group for updates, please check out the Far West Side Task Force Facebook page and the Far West Side Task Force website. Both will offer upcoming meeting dates and relevant information.
The Cross Creek Village Civic Association served as an interim, unifying voice for residents in the far west side area, as the Task Force was transitioning to the Area Commission.

It's time for a status update on our task force! We're making measurable progress in our quest to establish an area commission!

There's a lengthy list of items we're required to complete and submit to the city through our Neighborhoods Liaison, David Hooie, in order for council members to sponsor us and propose an ordinance establishing our area commission. Of those items, we've completed the following:

* In June, we submitted our proposed area commission borders. This will be reviewed by city planning staff, I believe. The proposed borders were determined by existing area commission borders to our east and south, the city of Hilliard border to the north, and the Brown Township/Hellbranch Run border to our west.

* At the end of July, we submitted our proposed bylaws. The proposed bylaws will be reviewed by the city attorney's office. Once approved, we can then begin obtaining the required signatures of Columbus residents within our task force border to include in our petition packet to the city (requesting to become an area commission).

**THANK YOU to the folks who've attended our meetings for the past year and a half. Without you, we wouldn't be in this position today, nearing the creation of the city's 20th area commission!!!**

**While we've made this much progress with a limited number of participants, we still need a few more task force members willing to serve on the task force and the subsequent area commission. Please email me at [email protected] if you think you may be interested, have questions, etc. There are more than 200 people in this Facebook group, but only a handful who have attended meetings regularly.**

City of Hilliard, Prairie Township and Norwich Township residents interested in participating, please email me at [email protected].

Our next meeting is tonight at 7:00 pm, at Hilliard Horizon Elementary, 6000 Renner Rd. If the front doors are locked, please enter through the west side doors. We are scheduled to meet in the media center.

Thank you!

Shared Councilmember Michael Stinziano's post to the group: Far West Side Task Force (Columbus, Ohio).  May 3 at 11:27am

Tonight in Columbus City Council, I'm sponsoring legislation with Councilmembers Shannon Granville Hardin & Jaiza Page to establish the West Scioto Area Commission.

I am encouraged by the enthusiasm & support of the West Scioto AC Task Force members and look forward to working with the new Commission.

Congratulations to the newly created West Scioto Area Commission – the city's 19th area commission! This is the same process that we, the Far West Side Task Force, must complete to become an area commission also.

Far West Side Area Commission
Task Force Initial Meeting

  • Wed, Apr 12, 7:00 PM
  • Donatos, 3817 N. Main St., Hilliard
    (at the double roundabouts)
  • COLUMBUS RESIDENTS: Many here have complained about development -- residential (homes, apartments) and commercial -- traffic, lack of a Columbus rec center here and other issues, as well as how Columbus residents don't seem to have much say in city matters. There IS a way to have a voice and "seat at the table," per se, with Columbus City Council -- by establishing an Area Commission. The purpose of an area commission is to act as a liaison between neighborhood groups, property owners, residents, developers and city officials.

Columbus residents who live within the area bordered in red on the map below (*west of I-270, not including Trabue Woods -- that's included in the soon-to-be-official West Scioto Area Commission) are invited to learn more about area commissions and the process to establish one:

Far West Side Area Commission

Far West Side Task Force Facebook Post, Sharon Rastatter
Columbus City Council established area Commissions in the early 1970s. The purpose of an area commission is to act as a liaison between neighborhood groups, property owners, residents, developers and city officials.
Because Columbus City Council is an at-large body without ward representation, the only chance that specific areas of town can have a "seat at the table" with city government is to form an Area Commission. This page/group is for residents who want to work together to establish the Far West Side Area Commission.

The Far West Side Area Commission includes the areas bordered on the east by I-270 (not including Trabue Woods), on the south by the rail road tracks, on the west by Alton-Darby Creek Road and on the north by the southernmost border of Hilliard.

The Far West Side Area Commission's borders:
On the East:  I-270 (except around Westbelt Drive, then it's west of Westbelt Drive and not including Trabue Woods subdivision)
On the West:  Alton-Darby Creek Road
On the South:  The rail road tracks south of Feder Road
On the North:  Hilliard's southernmost boundary
